Who Is Afreezy
My Story
I’ve been in love with hip-hop ever since I heard my first rap song — Stronger by Kanye West — in 5th grade. I dove into the genre and was captivated by the storytelling and philosophy of legends like Rakim, Jurassic 5, Mos Def, and Talib Kweli (bring back Blackstar), Gangstarr, and many more.
As I got older and the game changed in the early 2010s, I found it more difficult to relate to the music. The new trap sound pioneered by Gucci Mane and Future was incredibly catchy, but I couldn’t relate as much to the lyrics. I felt like there was more to be created with the autotuned, upbeat, and powerful vibes that the music gave off.
When I was 17, I had a vision. I had been freestyling for a couple years for fun. My vision was of myself rapping with a Migos / Bankroll Fresh (RIP) flow, but using lyrics that uplifted the soul.
When I was 19, I started a podcast called Applying Awareness. The purpose was to broadcast my journey of becoming aware of the cause and effect that shapes our lives on an individual and systematic level. I wanted to help people use this knowledge to empower themselves and make the changes they wanted to make in this world through their own growth.
I did the podcast for 35 episodes and planned on doing another season, but I had an issue — I was spending all of my spare time on music. I knew in my heart I had to roll with it. When I was on the mic it felt so effortless and easy; I couldn’t let that slide.
So I decided to dive into rapping. I hit up my friends who were producers and asked to collaborate. I released my first song, Sensei, on all streaming platforms.
I realized I was getting closer to my vision. The podcast had set the stage for getting a message out to an audience. My freestyling habit was the foundation for the delivery, lyricism, and sound that I possess today.
My mixtape Intention (2021) was a reflection of the spiritual expansion I’d been introduced to that year, post-Covid. It was a time of great opening and expansion for me, but also of instability and overconfidence as I grew ungrounded from the things that kept me humble and wise.
The years that followed were quieter — focusing on the relationship I have with my beautiful wife and finding direction in my career, more than putting out music. But I never stopped writing. I have around 300 songs written, with 6 released between 2022 and 2026. In total, I’ve released 19 songs — and I’ve definitely got some work to do.
Today I’m a hip-hop artist in Phoenix, born in Rockville, MD, and raised in Salt Lake City. I make music for people who have a purpose and are sitting with the complexity of living in between worlds.
Ultimately my goal is to share music as a way to bring people together in a space of love, joy, and celebration of life. My music is a calling card for those who feel a pull toward something greater than themselves — the creators who embody a future of abundance, respect, and authenticity. I want to leave an imprint on hip-hop that resonates with the roots of peace, love, unity, and having fun.
